March 2005 Article for Inside Texas Running Issue

The Tornados would like to honor our top three finishers in the Houston Marathon - men: Vaughn Gibbs 2:32, Simon Alvarado 2:45, Joe Oviedo 2:52; women: Alexandra Gajewski 3:03, Susan Walters 3:15, Sara Collazos 3:27.

The Tornado’s Running Club would like to announce our Tornados of the Year for 2004.  They were voted in at our pasta party, held January 14th.   The competition was fierce as there were only three categories.  Before they announced the winners, they said nice things like the voting was close and you are all winners - yeah right!  There was no apparent ballot box stuffing (however the UN monitors were absent) and the winners each received a nice plaque.  Without any further ado here are the winners: Francisco Perez - Runner of the Year, Joe Oviedo - New Runner of the Year and Victor Aguirre - Tornado of the Year.

Although you will have to wait ten months for the 2006 Tornados’ Houston Marathon Pasta Party, I want to give you a preview so you can get your membership in time.   Here is what you can expect based upon the 2005 party.  About sixty of us gathered at Jeff Nash’s beautiful home for ample portions of lasagna, bread and salad.  We rolled in the legendary St. Arnold’s keg.  Whereas it took 320 runners to handle two kegs at our X-C relay, it took just a mere 60 Tornados to prove our keg conditioning.  Then things really got going when Leno Rios pulled out the tequila and formed a shot circle, toasting Tornado success in the marathon.  It paid off as we had 51 full and 31 half marathon finishers!  There is always something magical about the Tornado's pasta party, all the excitement, food and friendships.  There is also magic in the math: how do you get a FREE pasta party, with food, St. Arnold's and tequila, when our annual club dues are only $10.00?  Plus if you don’t do the tequila shots, you can make good money with some sound “investments,” as some Tornados like to race with money motivation!  If you just can’t wait until next January, please join the Tornados for our Easter picnic on March 27th as it rivals the marathon pasta party.  To join the party, sign up at: www.tornadosrunningclub.com.
